The Huntington was founded in 1919 by Henry E. Huntington, it is a nonprofit institution that along with the seasons, has changed a lot with time. You can get lost in one of the largest research libraries in the United States. Spanning from books to manuscripts, to everything in between, the library is equipped with as many as 6 million rare treasures. If you are looking for just one way to spend your day, i am sure you will accomplish it here. Aside from the magnificent art work contained in some of the books, you will find art galleries inside as well. The Huntington Art Gallery contains the 18th-19th –century British and French art collection.
The Huntington’s landscape is made up of 120 acres amounting to 12 Botanical Gardens and about 15,000 different plants. The Rose, Desert, Jungle, Japanese and Children’s Garden were some of the most memorable to us. If you make the trip with kids, the Children’s Garden really calls to their curiosity. It is located near the Teaching Greenhouse and Conservatory which provides children with the opportunity to observe, teach, and experience botany.
Accompanying the ranges in colors are collections of outdoor sculptures from classic to contemporary. Make sure you pick up a map of the grounds at the entrance. It makes it easier to locate desired points of interest. Keep in mind the hours of operation vary. Plan accordingly. Our trip took up 4 hours of our day. Trust us when we say there is a lot of ground to cover!
Tips For Making Your Trip Manageable
No outside food is permitted- Dining is available inside
No Pets allowed- so be considerate, do not leave your pets locked in your cars
Treat the plants within the premises as an art piece. Do not pick at them or take them home
Event photography is available. Make advanced reservations
Respect wildlife
There is a fee to access The Huntington but for kids 4 and under it is free. They do have free days for the general public.
The most popular spot in the Huntington: Moon bridge, ponds, and the historic Japanese house- made in Japan and shipped to Pasadena in 1904.
Originally a private garden for Mr. Huntington and one of his favorites. It now contains over 3,000 individual plants. The covered path from the rose garden to the Japanese Garden is a photo fave, get those shots in.
Pictured: children’s garden with sonic pools and vortex. You will also find a conservatory-interactive science center. There is a sculpture between conservatory, gallery and the rose garden.
The Dessert-One of the largest collections in the world. Nearly 100 years old. Features more than 2000 species.
The Jungle-Consist of major trees, plants, ferns, waterfalls and vines.
