Bahía de Las Águilas, Dominican Republic

Bahía de las Águilas, or Eagle’s Bay, is a long beach that sits in the southwestern part of the island of the Dominican Republic. This tiny piece of paradise is actually closer to the border of Haiti in contrast to the majority of tourist destinations nestled on the eastern tip of the island.

How do you get there?

If you’re visiting the Dominican Republic already, the best way to get to Bahía de las Águilas is by car. If you rent a car in Santo Domingo, the drive takes about 6 hours more or less, depending on traffic. During the 3rd or 4th hour of your trip you will actually pass by the province of Barahona, famously known for “Los Patos de Barahona”. It’s worth stopping and checking out “Los Patos” where river and ocean meet as one. There are plenty of hotels in the area to check out, if you’d like.

If you keep going, the town before Bahía de las Águilas, is Pedernales and you can book a hotel for the night if you’re traveling late. I suggest booking this in advance because once you have a reservation they will check you in no matter what time you arrive. In the morning before you continue your drive, be sure to check out the local restaurants in Pedernales for breakfast or lunch. A single meal for a family of four will not cost you more than $20 and will include plenty of fresh seafood. There is a single road leading to Bahía and it is best you take some snacks with you as there are no food stands, carts, etc. on the beach. Once you arrive to your destination, there will be plenty of men with motorboats who will take you across the water to Bahía for about 1,000 pesos or 20 American dollars. They take you across and wait for you and your family to enjoy yourself in the isolated beach for as long as you’d like.

Why should I go there?

If you want a beach with beautiful white sand, crystal clear water, and rarely anyone in sight, then this is where you should go. The beaches located in Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and many other of the tourist hot spots pale in comparison to this hidden gem.
