Summers in New York are hot, humid and short. While the heat may have you running towards your air conditioned apartment or hotel, don’t forget about all the fun you can have outdoors! That’s why we bring you some tips and ideas on how to have the perfect picnic in this concrete jungle.
Location
So many places so little time! New York City offers various locations for picnics. To save you some time on research here are my top three.
Central Park
Location: Center of Manhattan. 59st to 110st.
Not only can you set a nice blanket on the grass anywhere in Central park (The Great Lawn being my personal favorite) you can also partake in activities such as baseball, bike riding, or riding the carousel in midtown around 64th street.
Hudson River
Location: Battery Park and West 59th St.
No blanket, no problem. There are tables and benches along the Hudson River, which overlook New Jersey, for you to prep your picnic on. The park also offers activities such as tennis, and mini golf, amongst others. Pier 62 has a Skate park which opens at 8am every day and in case you crave food, there are restaurants where you can enjoy a meal by the water.
Fort Washington Park: The Little Red Lighthouse
Location: Riverside Drive, 181st St. (under the George Washington Bridge)
There are picnic tables already situated there and trees to provide you with shade in case you need to cool down. The views are also beautiful so make sure you bring out your camera to capture some memories. It is also a great place to put together a small BBQ if you bring your own grill.
Preparation
Picnics consist of a lot of time outdoors. It is recommended you pack meals which are best served cold. Such meals can include salsa & chips, salads, the classic sandwich either homemade or from your favorite deli. Dried fruit is also a great option (trail mix is my personal favorite).
Don’t forget your fluids! You will need to stay hydrated throughout the day.I recommend carrying your liquids in plastic bottles, they are easier to carry and dispose of. You can always make your own concoction at home & transfer it into your own containers.
If you opt for something other than the traditional picnic basket you can save yourself time and space with backpack coolers such as the one below.
K&R Backpack Cooler. Comes with the items displayed in the picture. You can find it in online or at stores like Kmart or Walmart.
Extras
You are not always guaranteed free tables and benches, so pack a soft blanket or over-sized towel. I suggest something big & light enough to sit the amount of people you are with. You can also be your own personal DJ and pack a portable speaker such as the UE MINI BOOM. A camera will also be needed, whether it’s a personal camera or the one on your smartphone. Don’t forget your bug repellant & sunscreen!
Make sure that wherever you go, you enjoy your summer because Fall is right around the corner.
Safe Travels!
